Give your favourite deputy the Toy Story party they deserve with these epic cowboy games, alien party food and surprisingly easy to make costume ideas
Andy's toys have now won over kids' hearts for more than 20 years, which makes Toy Story the perfect theme for your little one's next birthday party.
Whether you're celebrating a brave cowboy, cheeky space ranger or a bold Bo Peep, check out these fun Toy Story party ideas – guaranteed to raise your party game to infinity and beyond.
1. Etch A Sketch party invitations
What better way to tell your kid's friends about the party than with Woody's old friend Etch?
Use red card to make the Etch A Sketch with two old plastic bottle lids for the knobs, like this fun craft we found on Pinterest.
2. Giant alphabet blocks
One way to make your kids feel like they are the actual toys in Andy's room is to make your decorations absolutely massive – like these giant alphabet blocks that Lyn Lees has made.
Simply take some old cardboard boxes and stencil letters in primary colours onto each side.
3. Toss the cowboy hat
Put those cowboy skills to the test with a game of ring (er, hat) toss.
Set up some cones on the floor, then see who can toss a cowboy hat onto the most targets. The player with the most successful hat tosses wins.
Check out this list for more fun party games for kids.
4. Hide and Bo Peep
A play on hide and go seek, this game involves the seeker (who we'll call Bo Peep) looking for their lost sheep (the other players hiding around the house).
If you want to be really silly, you can get Bo Peep to say "Baaa!" whenever they catch another player.
5. Cardboard Rex costume
An ambitious but super effective costume!
Take two large cardboard boxes – one for the dinosaur body and one for the head – and cut a jagged set of teeth out of one of them.
You'll end up with some jagged edged scrap cardboard, which you can glue to the head for the scales.
Cut two arm holes out of the body, and another hole for the neck out of both boxes. Glue the two boxes together and paint the whole thing green.
We've got more dino-themed party ideas in this dinosaur party guide.
6. Pin the face on Mr Potato Head
This is a great idea from Mimi's Dollhouse. Mr Potato Head has lost his arms, legs and face, and it's up to your party guests to fix him!
Cut out Mr Potato Head's body and appendages from different coloured pieces of paper, then get your guests – one by one – to pin the missing limbs and facial features onto his body while blindfolded.
You can help each player by handing them the items that need to be pinned.
7. The claaaw fishing game
You'll need a few reach extenders and green balloons for this game, which was made up by @laurabee_17 on Instagram.
Just like the arcade game in Pizza Planet, get your kids and their friends to fish as many aliens (green balloons) as they can from a paddling pool using a reach extender.
Fill the paddling pool with water to make the game even more challenging!
8. Cactus pinata
This tutorial from Taste at Home shows you how to make a great cactus piñata, which would look right at home in Woody's Wild West.
9. Toilet roll spaceship
You can set this activity up on a crafts table, or make some toilet roll spaceships before the party and hang them up as decorations.
You just need some paint and felt tip pens to turn your old toilet roll tubes into Buzz Lightyear's space rocket or an astronaut suit.
Browse this list for more fun toilet roll craft ideas.
10. Homemade pizza
No Toy Story party is complete without a visit to Pizza Planet!
Follow this recipe to cook up some homemade pizza, or this one to make mini pizzas perfect for hyper kids on the move.
You could also help your kids and their friends to add their own pizza toppings for a fun (and edible) party activity.
Follow these tips for the perfect pizza party.
11. Alien macarons
These alien macarons by Instagram user @the__insomniac_bakes look like the ideal snack for peckish guests.
Follow this recipe to make the macarons, then use a little icing to add the alien eyes and mouth.
12. Toy Story cake
This birthday cake by 3 Tiny Things has got all the key elements – Woody's shirt, Buzz's space suit and the fluffy clouds from Andy's room.
You'll need to make a three tiered sponge cake first. This recipe shows you how to make the sponge – you just need to bake it using three different sized cake tins.
Cover each layer in fondant icing first (white for Buzz, yellow for Woody, and blue for the sky), then use a piping bag to add detail.
13. Buzz Lightyear costume
Making a Buzz Lightyear costume might look complicated, but it's actually pretty simple if you have a grey tracksuit and a box of paints.
Follow our step-by-step instructions to make your own Buzz outfit at home.
14. Woody costume
Putting together a Woody costume is even easier!
Start off with a pair of jeans and a bandana neckerchief, then source a yellow and red checkered shirt (if you can't find one in the shops, you can draw on a plain yellow shirt in red pen).
Pair with a cowboy hat and a cow print waistcoat and you're good to go.
15. Cow print tablecloth
Speaking of cow print, you can't go wrong with a cow print tablecloth, or some cow print balloons, like in this Pinterest pin by Lisa Marie Ordway.
Combine with bright blue, yellow and red decorations to get that Toy Story look.
16. Andy's Room obstacle course
Part of the fun in any Toy Story film are the obstacle courses the toys set up to get themselves out of any pickle.
Make your own obstacle course in the garden or living room and see who can finish it the fastest.
17. Bo Peep costume
This Bo Peep costume by @analiciasarai on Instagram is just brilliant, and is really easy to put together.
Match a powder blue top and pair of trousers with a pink belt, and pin some lace to the front of the top.
Follow our instructions to make a no-sew cape, then complete the look with Bo Peep's shepherdess crook (you can either buy one in a costume store or make one out of cardboard).
18. Bo Peep's sheep cake
Woody and Buzz don't have to be the hero of every Toy Story party. If your get together is leaning more towards Bo Peep, you could bake a Bo Peep themed cake!
Follow this recipe to make a delicious marshmallow sheep birthday cake.
19. Blue sky wallpaper
From the film's opening credits, Andy's cloud wallpaper is an iconic feature of Toy Story.
Decorate your party with a couple of wallpaper strips, or make your own by painting clouds onto blue paper.
20. Find the toy soldiers
This will keep the kids occupied for hours! Hide a few toy soldiers around the house and garden, and see who can find the most.
(Don't forget to keep a record of where you hide them, or you could be finding them for months!)
21. There's a snake in my boot!
For this game made up by Wonder Kids, you'll need some toy plastic snakes and a bucket with a cowboy boot drawn on it.
See which of your kids' friends can successfully throw the most snakes into the bucket.
22. Bouncy ball centrepiece
This is a fun decoration for the snack table, which was put together by Lizet Marin on Pinterest.
First, paint a styrofoam ball to look like one of Andy's toy bouncy balls. Puncture it with a large cocktail stick and stand it up in a pot filled with bright coloured tissue paper.
23. Pizza Planet party favours
Instead of the traditional party bag, send your kids' guests home with their own Pizza Planet party box – like these ones made by @superbakedgoods on Instagram.
Buy some white package boxes from the post office and paint a Pizza Planet logo on them with red paint.
Since it's a Toy Story party, you can fill your boxes with lots of small toys – think a slinky, a bouncy ball, or toy soldiers. Don't forget a slice of cake too!
