If you're expecting twins or your second child, it's time to invest in a double pushchair.
There are three main types of double buggy to choose from, twin (seats side by side), tandem (one seat behind the other), or a convertible model that can transform from a single seater to a double and back again.
Some models have identical seats, so are suitable for children of the same age, for example two newborns or toddlers.
Others have seats designed for siblings of differing ages, so one from birth and another for an older child.
You can spend anything from just over £100 to well over £500, so there really is something for every budget and lifestyle.
1. Hauck Duett 2
*One seat suitable from newborn up to 15kg and one from six months up to 15kg
*Backrest adjustable to lie-flat position with lockable front wheels swivelling through 360 degrees
*Footmuff and two rain covers included
This Hauck pushchair can fit one baby from newborn up to 15kg (around three years old), and another over the age of six months up to 15kg. It's the ideal solution if you have two little ones with an age gap, plus the handlebar has three height adjustments from 94 - 111 cm so you can move it up to where it is comfortable for you. The pushchair can be combined with the Hauck Comfort Fix infant car seat by using the Duett 2 adapters (both sold separately).
2. Bugaboo Donkey 3
*Can be used with one or two seats
*Storage compartment when in single mode
*Rugged and durable pushchair that will last years
This buggy can be used as a single with a handy side luggage compartment or transformed into a side-by-side double by extending the frame and adding a second seat, carrycot or car seat. The wheels are large with foam-filled, puncture-proof tyres that will give a smooth ride over the bumpiest of ground. It can be folded with the seats in place, which is handy, though it's pretty bulky – so check that it'll fit in the boot of your car and through your front door before buying! There are lots of different seat configurations and the basket is generous.
3. Chicco Echo Twin Stroller
*Great budget option that has a wide range of features
*Has a five-point safety harness with chest pads
*Suitable to use from birth up to three years old
This stroller is great for parents who need a compact, fuss-free stroller for their twins. It's suitable for newborns and can support two children up to the age of three, and has wide seats with fully adjustable five point safety harnesses, with shoulder pads. The seats feature reclinable backrests which can be operated with just one hand. The umbrella fold function makes it ideal for easy, compact storage, plus it has a rain cover and storage basket.
4. Mountain Buggy Duet
*Safety brake on the handlebar
*The slimmest side-by-side double
*Can be used with two carrycots
This is great for outdoorsy families who love nothing more than long walks in the woods and on the beach – the great all-terrain chassis will take you anywhere. It's a neat, fairly slim pushchair for a double and it has bouncy air-filled tyres to help create a smooth ride.
It's quite heavy and bulky when folded (you can do so with one hand) but you have to weigh that up against its ability to transport two heavy toddlers with ease. The foot rest is sturdy and the basket large enough for a week's shopping. It comes with one carrycot and you can add another plus car seats to create a travel system.
5. Out n About Nipper Double
*Suitable from birth to four years
*Compact fold
*Auto lock clips the buggy together when folded
With room for two babies side by side, this has independently reclining seats so you can use it for twins or children of different ages. With independent rear suspension, a lockable front swivel wheel and pneumatic tyres, it will give your babies a smooth ride. It also has an adjustable handle, an easy to use brake and a retractable sun canopy with a viewing window so you can keep an eye on your kids. You can add carrycots for very young babies and it's very easy to push and steer.
