Supermarket rations THIS item as teens strip stores bare thanks to TikTok craze

Last modified on Friday 31 March 2023

Teens are getting up before 5am to get their hands on new energy drink.

Every wondered how to get the kids up early in the morning? Well here's a guaranteed method to have them bolting from their beds: tell them your local supermarket has had a delivery of Prime energy drinks!

Tweens and teens up and down the country are joining in a crazy TikTok challenge to get their hands on the drink, and are stripping branches of Asda – where it is exclusively stocked in the UK – bare within seconds of it being put out for sale.

There are even reports of youngsters hitting the stores at 5am and queuing for them to open!

The drink, which comes in 11 different flavours including blue raspberry, tropical punch, lemon-lime, and orange was launched in America in January this year by boxing rivals and social media stars Logan Paul and KSI. It immediately became a must-have product with youngsters and demand has continued to grow since it launched in the UK in June.

Demand for the drink has now got so bad that Asda are begging people to shop 'responsibly' and imposing limits on how many bottles each customer can buy. Which might sound drastic, but when you hear that the £1.50 drinks are changing hands for up to £60 a time on eBay, you can see why they're putting restrictions in place.

According to the Sun, one branch of Asda in Dorset had 30 kids waiting outside its doors on Sunday, after they'd got wind there had been a delivery of the drink. A member of staff told the paper they had to have security in place to stop things getting out of hand.

'On Sunday we finally had a fresh delivery and there were about 30kids outside before we had opened,' the worker revealed. 'At 9.30am we had a member of security outside trying to keep it all under control. As soon as the doors opened they sprinted for the energy drink aisle. It was chaos, they cleared the shelves within minutes and were pushing and shoving each other to get their hands on some.'

One TikTok creator shared footage of kids in the Bournemouth branch of the supermarket, and captioned it 'never have I seen scenes like this for a drink!' as a gaggle of youngsters filled the screen good-naturedly jostling to grab bottles from the shelves.

And while some corners of social media are awash with disgruntled customers complaining they can't get their hands on a bottle because of the current craze, Asda insist they are replenishing the shelves as often as they can.

'We know how popular this product is and we would like to assure customers that our stores are regularly receiving stock,' a spokesperson said.

The drink is considered a more healthy option than normal 'energy' drinks as it is caffeine free, vegan, and made from 10% coconut water, with natural flavours, antioxidants and electrolytes.

The current scenes in supermarkets are leaving some shoppers scratching their heads though, as they struggle to understand the appeal. One customer told Wales Online:

'It's crazy. Kids are getting up at 5am to get their hands on them and then flogging them on for profit once they get to school. It's becoming like gold dust. All this for an energy drink.'

Quite!

What do you think? Have your kids embraced this craze? Or *whisper* have you been hitting the shops desp to get your hands on a bottle of Prime, too?!
