Smoothie recipes for kids
Smoothies are great - they're refreshing, children love them and they're an easy way to get everyone eating more fruit...
- Difficulty: Easy
- Freezable
Preparation
Strawberry smoothie
10 strawberries (a couple less or a couple more depending on the size)
120g natural yoghurt (1x small pot)
1 banana (the riper it is the sweeter it will be)
1 tsp honey (runny)
Banana smoothie
2 bananas (ripe ones work best)
1 tbsp honey (runny)
1 tbsp natural yoghurt (or any flavour you fancy)
400ml milk
Banana and apple smoothie
1 banana, chopped
1 apple, chopped
60g natural yoghurt (1/2 small pot)
60ml milk
1 tsp honey (runny)
3 ice cubes
Banana, orange & passion fruit smoothie
1 banana
2 oranges
120g greek honey yoghurt (1x pot)
1 passion fruit

Whizz up all the ingredients in a food processor (or with a hand blender) to make a delicious smoothie - serve straight away
Banana smoothie
Peel, chop and mash bananas till mushy
Add honey, yoghurt and milk
If the bananas are really soft you can mash it up pretty well with just a fork, otherwise to make it even easier I just gave it a quick whizz with my handheld blender then its lovely smooth
Pour into cups/glasses and add a curly straw for extra appeal if you want
Banana and apple smoothie
Whizzed together make a delicious smoothie that both my daughter and myself love - a great start to the day
Banana, orange & passion fruit smoothie
Really basic smoothie I make in the mornings which my son loves - blend and sieve, delicious!!!
You will need
Food processor - We love this muti-tasking food processor, blender and mixer by Nutribullet as it's high-speed and powerful and will prepare a healthy meal in seconds. You can find it at Amazon for £34.99.
Mason jars - These will make your smoothies SO appealing to your children (and any other guest). You can get a pack of six 500ml ones that also come with lids and straws at Amazon for £21.99.
Tips
Bear in mind that honey isn't safe for babies under 1. So if making these smoothies for a baby, leave it out. Kids will love helping you add everything to the blender and watching it whizz around. You can even sneak in a little super healthy veg like kale or spinach - hidden by the fruit flavours, the kids will guzzle it down!
Smoothies include the whole fruit so the vitamins and other nutrients are in a very natural form, combined with the fruit's fibre and this means that they cause fewer fluctuations in blood sugar levels.
The other bonus is children tend to like smoothies made of fruits that they would otherwise not touch, so by drinking them they get used to a larger variety of real fruit tastes.
You don't have to have a special smoothie maker - a liquidiser or a hand held blender works just as well. Simply throw any fruit that you have in the kitchen into a container and liquidise. You can jazz up your smoothies by adding different milks and yoghurts... again it's a great way to introduce other forms of non-dairy milk just to add a little variety into their diet.
Variations
Fruits: bananas, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries (the frozen variety make the drink nice and refreshing), cherries, oranges, passion fruit, kiwi fruit, mango
Liquids: milk, goat's milk, soya milk, oat milk, buffalo milk, water, Greek yoghurt, flavoured yoghurt, fruit juice
Yummy extras: chocolate chips, honey, melted chocolate bar, ice cream
Dairy-free smoothie: the best smoothie we've made included healthy doses of strawberries, bananas, a few (dairy free) chocolate chips and soya milk - MMMmmmm.... Perfect for those on a dairy free diet - sent in by Vicky
Frozen smoothie: in summer you can freeze half the fruit and add ice cubes to make a frozen smoothie, a much healthier version of the commercial milkshakes you get - sent in by Ineke

★★★★☆Nice recipes but what happens if you don't like bananas!? Every recipe includes them, would have thought you can't just leave them out especially on the strawberry one?

★★★★★These smoothies are so simple and easy to make with minimum ingredients. The strawberry smoothie is the only one that my 8 year old will drink and that's nothing against the others it's just that he is so fussy.

★★★★★Got a new Breville smoothie maker for Christmas but was devoid of inspiration on what to make. Netmums to the rescue. Looking for 1 recipe, but Netmums spoiled me with 4 to try - that was me set for a while, at least until I found my own inspiration and confidence to throw together my own concoctions. Of the 4, it's the good old fashioned Strawberry smoothie that gets my vote as top of the shop. They were all great though.

★★★★★My children wanted to make smoothies, but I didn't know how! This is a great basic start which we used and now make them about 5 times a week, trying new fruits and different flavours. Our favourite is a blueberry and Banana one.
