  • 2 apples (any type of apples are fine)

  • 1 tbsp water

  1. Peel, core and chop the apples

  2. Cook in a pan on a low heat with a drop of water and some sugar (1-2 tsp per apple depending on how sweet the apples are)

  3. Stir occasionally, until the apple cooks down into a puree

  4. If the sauce is too thick, add some more water

  5. Serve

Tips

Apple sauce is delicious served with meat; especially pork or used as a dessert with yoghurt or creme fraiche.

You may have heard that apple sauce is a great food for weaning babies, but it's best to avoid making this recipe for babies, because of the added sugar. Instead, try our apple puree recipe, which is perfect as one of your baby's first foods.

Variations

Cook the apples in a microwave (for a few minutes on medium) but make sure you cover the dish and stir halfway through the cooking time

Prefer a lumpy sauce? Leave some of the apple chunks out to begin with, and add them later in the cooking so they don't get so soft.

Serving with pork? Try adding a little bit of dried sage.

Serving with chicken? Try adding some cranberries!

This is so simple to make and it's so versatile . I use it as an accompaniment to roast dinner on a Sunday and also as a compote with cereal and yoghurt for breakfast .
