Hi all I’m wondering if anyone has any advice my Lo is 5 1/2 weeks old and we have had it pretty rough since he was born. Started with constantly throwing up after a feed so the doctor said to feed little and often this did nothing. He was then put on sma althira with suspected cows milk allergy. This did nothing so he was moved on to sma alfamino and prescribed gaviscon. The gaviscon didn’t work and was still being sick and becoming constipated.

he is now on carobel to thicken his milk as it’s very watery. This is really helping with the sickness ( just under 1 scoop in 4oz) however my Lo is doing 1 poo a day which is normal for him but it’s diarrhoea, very watery and has become a lot more unsettled. Crying a lot, appearing in pain lots of excess wind and tensing up. This can be at any time but seems worse in the early evening. Does anyone have any advice as I’m still waiting for my appointment with the dietitian and paediatrician.

thanks Amy

Hi Amy

Sorry to hear about your LO.

May I ask apart from the sickness was your LO showing any other signs of a suspected cows milk allergy?

I ask this as reflux is very common in young babies and the symptoms can sometimes be similar to those with allergies. However as statistics show us reflux is much more common so usually we would look to treat the reflux before moving on to other possible diagnosis'.

You can read more about reflux here Reflux in babies - NHS (www.nhs.uk)

Reflux can be eased with a thickened milk and/or medication. Your GP will be able to assess and identify what may be the best treatment plan to offer your LO.

You may also find Cow's Milk Allergy | Allergy UK | National Charity helpful if your LO has a suspected CMPA.

I hope this helps in the short term whilst you await contact from a dietician and/or paediatrician.

All the best

Emma
