Cristiano Ronaldo opens up about the tragic death of his newborn son

Cristiano Ronaldo has opened up about the death of his baby son and how the tragic experience has affected him and his fiancée Georgina Rodriguez.

The footballer, 37, and Georgina, 28, were expecting twins but sadly lost their newborn son Angel in April this year. Their newborn daughter Bella survived.

The couple are also parents to five-year-old daughter Alana Martina and Bella Esmerelda, seven months. Cristiano is also dad to Cristiano Jr, 12 and five-year-old twins Eva and Mateo. While he's never disclosed their mum, it's known he used a surrogate in the US.

Cristiano spoke to Piers Morgan about the devastating event in ITV's Cristiano Ronaldo Meets Piers Morgan, revealing that it was one of the worst moments of his life.

He told Piers:

'Piers, probably the worst moments that I passed through my life, since my father die, you know, when you have a kid that you expect that everything will be normal, and you have that problem, it's, it's hard, you know, as human being that I am.'

He added that it was made all the harder because they didn't know why they had lost their son:

'We had quite difficult moments because we don't understand why it happened to us. Was difficult to be honest, was very, very difficult to understand what's going on, in that in that period of our life.

'As you know, the football carry on there, so fast, many competitions, the football don't stop. We had many, many competitions. And pass through in that moment was probably the most difficult moment that I have in my life. Me and my family, especially Gio [Georgina Rodriguez], that was tough.'

Cristiano also spoke out on the birth of his daughter, explaining that it was hard to feel both sad and happy at the same time.

He added:

'It’s crazy. I tried to explain sometimes to my family and even my close friends. I say, I never felt to be happy and sad in the same moment. I never felt. It is hard to explain.

'It's so difficult. It's, you don't know if you cry or you don't know if you smile. Because it's something that you don't know how to react. You don't know what to do, to be honest.'

Ronaldo also revealed that he'll keep his son's ashes with him for the 'rest of his life' and shared that he's placed them next to his dad's ashes.

Cristiano and Georgina have also had to field tough questions in the months after their son's death – even from their own children.

In the same interview with Piers Morgan, the footballer revealed that his other children – Cristiano Jr, Eva, Mateo, and Alana – asked where the other baby was when he and Georgina arrived home with Bella.

He said:

'Gio arrived home and the kids start to say where's the other baby, where's the other baby?

'The kids start to say "Mom, where is the other baby…."

'After one week I say, "Let's be upfront, and let's be honest with the kids, let's say that, Ángel, which is his name, he go to the Heaven."'

Cristiano and Georgina made the sad announcement with a joint statement in April this year, in which they wrote:

'It is with our deepest sadness we have to announced that our baby boy has passed away. It is the greatest pain that any parents can feel. Only the birth of our baby girl gives us the strength to live this moment with some hope and happiness.

'We would like to thank the doctors and nurses for all their expert care and support.

'We are all devastated at this loss and we kindly ask for privacy at this very difficult time.

'Our baby boy, you are our angel. We will also love you.'
