Can you eat panna cotta when pregnant?

The official advice on eating panna cotta in pregnancy

Great news! Panna cotta is safe to eat while you're pregnant, as long as it's made with pasteurised cream or milk.

Shop-bought panna cottas will be pasteurised; supermarkets aren't allowed to sell unpasteurised products. Most restaurant panna cottas will be made with pasteurised cream too, but if in doubt, you can always ask.

The NHS advises against having unpasteurised milk, cream or other dairy products during pregnancy. This is because they can contain certain types of harmful bacteria, including listeria. This can cause an infection called listeriosis, which could make your unborn baby very unwell. In rare cases, listeriosis could lead to miscarriage or stillbirth.

Cooking unpasteurised foods until they're steaming hot will kill off listeria. However, panna cotta is sometimes only gently heated, which is why it's best to always use pasteurised dairy products.
