My daughter was just diagnosed with Coeliac today, she's 8, so but devestated she can't have McDonald's nuggets her favourite and scones. My son was diagnosed before the Christmas he's three so he just went with it and knows if it's not gluten free or in his special press he can't have it, he's great. My daughter on the other hand is used to her grub. I always made scones in the morning for bfast and I can't seem to get it right with the gluten free flour anyone have any tips? Also does anyone know where I can get bake at home rolls gf?

Hello Claire

I'm really pleased to see you have started a thread of your own.

I notice you had also replied to an older thread in our forum, which meant you were less likely to get a response. Now you have a brand new thread of your own, this will hopefully mean you get more replies. I do hope other people come to chat with you soon.

Just a thought Claire, it may help if you called your thread what you wanted to chat about as this would make it much more searchable to others.

If you included 'coeliac disease', in the title, you may find becomes more visible.

As you have experience of this already, I am sure you are aware of the support networks available, but adding this link here just in case

Best wishes

Hi Tracey,

thanks so much for your reply. I don't know how to change the heading? Do you know? I joined the Coeliac society Ireland but I'm trying to get in touch with them as my password isn't letting me in. But anymore information is always welcome. Thanks again,

Claire😊

Asda do bake at home rolls, not all stores but the larger stores near me so shop around. They have them in free from aisle and on frozen aisle.

Look at merry Berry's scone recipe, use doves gluten free self raising flour. Use butter not Marge or similar. Add 2tsp of canthium gum... Can also buy at Asda and most supermarkets.

Don't overmix, same with cake and biscuits making,.

You can buy Tesco scones in gf aisle, but they are vile of used to home made.

As for maccers get fries and cook chicken nuggets at home. Do you have an air fryer? Check ingredients on Asda fries, you will find they are gf, buy Asda or other supermarket own gf chicken nuggets. Cook fries in air fryer and put on plate, set aside. Cook nuggets next. Once nuggets are out chuck fries back in for 1-2 mins to reheat and it tastes like maccers.

Or don't go to maccers use it as a way to try new places and different things.

Or say this is how much maccers costs, this is how much it costs to make it, and say if we make our own we can use this money to go towards something..

You could have a jar where you chuck some.change in and then let them have it in half term to buy some craft things, a magazine or something... Just a thought

Good luck, she will get easier with time about the transition. We all went gluten free as made it easier, less contamination risks and kids felt fair then. Also not saying you should but.just a thought. You can still eat regular when at school lol

My brother was very poorly before being diagnosed with Coeliac at 4 years old. So I grew up having a gluten free diet at home. I remember my mum baking cakes a lot and she was brilliant at it. I don't remember having scones, but I know gf flour tends to crumble more easily as it doesn't have the gluten to hold it together. The cakes that held together best had dried fruit in to bind it, so if your daughter likes sultanas try that, and/or perhaps follow a specific gluten free recipe and research the best gf flour. It is important to get the nutrition right for someone with Coeliac so I would try and slowly introduce breakfast with more nutrients if possible. With regards to takeaways my brother loves Nando's and has never had McDonalds Chicken nuggets so doesn't know what he is missing. Again Nando's will have more nutrients so perhaps try and make your own chicken nuggets and try and introduce your daughter to Nandos for a treat. It's harsh on your daughter but she will adapt in time. My brother regularly eats homemade sponge cakes. He also can get gf pizza at pizza chains for a treat.

Ah thanks a million for your replay. Definitely will take them on board, she's getting used to the idea because she can still have her sour patch kids jellies! It sounds like trial and error kinda thing.

Thanks so much,

Claire🙂

Hello Claire

I have checked with the Helpdesk, and thread titles cannot be changed, which is a shame.

You could always start another one as well, but with a new heading. There is no harm in doing that at all and you may find you get a lot more replies.

Best wishes

I would suggest you look up ‘glutenfreecuppatea’. This is a blog written by Becky Excell, a lady who lives in Essex and has helped many coeliac people. She has loads of recipes on this blog and all are very easy to follow. She also has a Facebook page, and has now written 5 recipe books which are available on Amazon. The Facebook page is very friendly Group with lots of advice asked for and given. Good Luck!
