My Mum lived in the farm opposite the castle for many years so I have fond memories of it, however taking children is a stressful affair! I would reccomend this for older children,(8ish) perhaps if they are learning some history at school. Its a beautiful castle, with lots of interesting features, but it's a National Trust property and they are careful to make sure it its preserved. Kids are not allowed to climb the walls, the turrets are narrow to climb and quite high, plus the moat is open so sensible behavior needed. We had a lovely day out here though.

Hi - we went on a hot summers day and it felt quite magical. However, totally agree with the review above, it was almost impossible to take a toddler up some of the steep stairwells so you have to go individually. You probably couldn't put them in a backpack affair on your back either, as the stairwells are quite narrow/steep. It was lovely looking around and having a picnic on a hot summers day, though.

Beautiful, stunning castle that looks magical and glorious wht ever the weather. You can just pay to park and walk around the groundsand feed the MASSIVE fish in the moat, or pay a bit more and go into the ruins. Great grounds to bring a picnic (also a pub opposite) or use the cafe on site. Am sure you can get a steam train there (not done this but heard about it).. would recommend a visit for all those wannabe knights and princesses...

This is a lovely castle, but hard work with snall children, especially if you have one that wants to climb the towers and another in the buggy. baby carriers work best if you want to explore the whole place. It has lovely grounds for a picnic.
