Actor Sir Michael Gambon, who played Albus Dumbledore in the hit movies, has died aged 82
Iconic actor Sir Michael Gambon, loved by kids around the world for his role as Dumbledore, has died.
His family shared the sad news earlier today (Thursday 28 September), saying they are devastated.
Sir Michael died peacefully in hospital following a bout of pneumonia.
A statement released on behalf of his wife Lady Gambon and son Fergus Gambon, said: 'We are devastated to announce the loss of Sir Michael Gambon.
'Beloved husband and father, Michael died peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside, following a bout of pneumonia. Michael was 82.
'We ask that you respect our privacy at this painful time and thank you for your messages of support and love.'
'He brought immeasurable joy to Harry Potter fans'
Sir Michael starred as the much-loved Albus Dumbledore in 6 of the 8 Harry Potter films. He was cast following the death of actor Richard Harris, who originally played Dumbledore, in 2002.
Sir Michael's first Dumbledore appearance was in the 2004 film 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban', through the final film, 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.'
The official Harry Potter Instagram account today shared a photo of Sir Michael Gambon, writing: 'We are incredibly saddened to hear of the passing of Sir Michael Gambon.
'He brought immeasurable joy to Harry Potter fans from all over the world with his humour, kindness and grace. We will forever hold his memory in our hearts.'
Tributes poured in for the actor from celebrities and Harry Potter fans around the world. One Twitter fan account, PotterheadPosts, wrote simply: 'Raising our wands for Michael Gambon.'
