Hello everyone, im going to get straight to the point..

I have a 2 year old kid (2 years and 7 months to be precise) and since last october he has developed this really annoying habit which is making it difficult for me to understand what his problem is.

Everytime he cries he starts singing a random nursery rhyme (yesterday he was crying and singing the "i want to eat apples and bananas" song and today it was the "boo boo" song from cocomelon and he has a few others )

I dont know why he does this and he is my first child so idk if this is just one of those wierd things kids do and grow out of.

Developmentally he is doing fine but he is alittle behind with speech as in using 3 word sentences but i guess that is because he has not had much interaction with other children, he has only been around me as my husband works nightshifts and sleeps most of the day and other than me speaking he learns the rest from tv (although we have gone cold turkey with the nursery rhymes he gets to watch ms rachel for about 2 hours a day who he likes to imitate and roleplay 24/7).

He knows over 100 words and names of many things and can follow simple instructions etc. But idk why he sings when he cries. Does anyone elses kid do this because i find it embarressing when sometimes i go to pick him up from day care and he cries and starts singing that i have to carry him out swiftly so other parents dont give me wierd looks 😩

I keep trying to explain to him that he needs to tell me in words what the matter is and say "i am crying because..." but it isnt working and its stressing me out..

Additional note: my MIL said his father used to do the same thing when he was his age and they used to find it funny and he grew out of it when he was like 7 years old! 😱 he seems fine otherwise though!

Hello Honey

I would not worry at all about your LO from the behaviour you are describing here.

How amazing your LO has so many words, he is really doing well!

If he sings when he is upset, then this maybe just his way of dealing with his emotions perhaps? What happens if you just join in with his song? Does this help calm his down at all and make him feel better? This would be something worth trying perhaps.

One other thing that may be worth thinking about...He is still quite little and may not yet be able to 'name' the feeling he has, so if you ask him he may struggle to tell you? What do you think?

Have you thought instead of asking him to complete the sentence "I am crying because..." , you could notice his feelings instead? You could try to say something like... "I think you are sad / happy / hungry etc" . This maybe another way to support him with his feelings, so he can express what they are through you?

Let us know what you think, we are here to help.

Best wishes

Tracey HV
