My 2 year old has started to blink really hard. It started about a week ago with just the occasional big blink, but now he does this a lot. Is this just a phase? His nursery has mentioned it and they said not to draw attention to it and it may just pass. Anyone know why this has happened and will he grow out of it. Should I take him for an eye test?

Hi Jane,
My son does this aswell! He will be four next week, & has done it for just over a year now.
I took him for an eye test as I was worried, but they don't think its a problem with his sight - just a habit that he has got into, kind of a tic.
I've noticed that for my son, it gets alot worse when he is tired. Sometimes he will not do it for a few days, and then it will be constant for a couple of days, and then slow up again.
The opticians did put my mind at rest, but once he starts school next year, and recognises some more letters, I will take him back (just to double check) as he will be able to do a normal eye test. Hope that helps a bit

Sam used to do this.In his case (im not saying that this will be the case with your lo),he was constantly blinking as he was struggling with his long sited vision in his right eye. This was not picked up on his eye test, but picked up when he was referred to the eye hospital for a squint. He has had glasses for 2 and a half days now (he is just turned 5) and rarely blinks at all (well down to normal amounts lol).Because his vision in his right eye was blurred he was blinking alot thinking that would clear it.Might be worth keeping an eye on to see if it gets any worse

Hiya, personally I would take him for an eye test. My DD went through a similar thing and turns out she was very long sighted and has now been in glasses for nearly a year and the blinking has stopped. If nothing else it will put your mind to rest and if glasses are needed your optician can refer you via your gp. It should not matter if they do not regonise letters as pictures are usually used for little ones rather than the letter chart x

My 2 year old has been doing this for about the last week. I have been ignoring it & will see how it is in next few days, if it carries on I will take her to the Opticians. I hope she does not need glasses yet!!

Hi my son occasionally does this and I took him to the gp. It randomly started one day and carried on for about 6 weeks, I ignored it & it went away.

It came back again about 3 months later & we we're reffered to eye clinic at the hospital, he had tests which included dilating his eyes which was awful 😐 but all was fine and they couldn't see any issues. The blinking stopped again after a few weeks & hasn't returned.

I did a lot of research & children at this age can develop a tic that usually goes on its own. If there's been any changes etc in his routine sometimes that's how they develop but I'd say get a gp appointment 1st for piece of mind and just try your best to not draw attention to it.

Good luck x

Hey my son did this two and his did turn out need glasses he has a nystagmus to so he use to do it to refocus it’s not a bad thing and isn’t necessarily what your son has but a normal optimism won’t see him ring your go and ask to be referred to an opthmolagist everything is worth checking my other son I thought had perfect vision was very shocked he needed glasses to it’s always better to do it younger just in case it needs to strengthen the muscles wearing glasses young doesn’t always mean forever xxx

Hi there,

My 3 year old does this a lot and I am wondering if you saw it resolved for your little one? It has been on and off for 2.5 weeks now and she also just started school which really doesn't help. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Hi Sarah,

This happened to my daughter as well.

If your kids eye test is normal then this can be due to side effect of below scenario.

My daughter used to sleep near window.

In the summer season we switch on fan with full speed to keep the room cool.

Now due to fan the curtain keeps waving like a flag, in the nigh it doesn't causes any issue but once sun is out the torture to the eyes starts.

Sun and then shade falls on the kids face and this switch multiple times because of curtain movement.

Once I found this I changed my daughter's sleeping place and soon the blinking issue was gone.

Just find out if anything similar is happening with your kid.

I too went to various doctors but no luck :(

Sometimes you need to find the root cause to solve the issue.

Thank you
