30 of the weirdest pregnancy cravings
1. Fancy a sandwich?
There's nothing like a sarnie to hit the spot when you're peckish – unless your pregnant that is. Check out these rather unusual sandwich fillings, craved by pregnant mums on our forum.
2. Mustard sandwiches ...
Yep, just mustard. 'I craved mustard sandwiches when I was pregnant in the same way I crave Dairy Milk now I'm not!'
FREE NEWBORN NAPPIES
Umm ...
3. Chocolate and brown sauce delight
A buttered roll with a Cadbury's Caramel and brown sauce inside.
'It had to be chip shop brown sauce though,' one forum member said. 'Anything else didn't quite hit the spot'
Sweet and savoury?!
4. Mint sauce sandwiches
Tangy!
5. Egg and Quaver baguettes
Now this we can get on board with ...
6. Rubber
Slippers, tennis balls, rubber bands ... Anything rubbery seems to have been popular with our forum members!
'I ate the sole of my mum's slippers,' said one. Eeeuuggh!
7. Bubbles
Lovely, umm, bubbly!
'I would run a great big bubble bath just so I could lie in it and lick the bubbles off the top!'
8. Sponge
Sadly, no, we don't mean the Victoria variety.
'I used to suck the water out of it as well – it tasted so good.'
9. Toothpaste
Nothing beats a wet flannel covered in toothpaste, according to one of our forum members.
Mmmm ...
10. Toilet paper
We tell no lies, toilet paper was actually munched on by one of our members.
Clean of course!
11. Cake mix
Everyone loves to lick the bowl after making a cake!
'I wanted cake mix so much, I could eat it by the bowl load. I know it's really bad as it has raw egg in it, but I loved it!'
12. Paper clips
Yes, really.
'I had a huge craving for paper clips (I didn't actually eat any but sucked on them vehemently).'
13. Dry teabags
Fancy a cuppa? Don't bother – the contents of a teabag will do!
'Seriously. I want to chew on dry teabags all day long!'
14. Chalk
A fairly popular one, it seems!
'I loved eating chalk in both my pregnancies and was particularly fussy about the brand. When white chalk was hard to find I moved onto coloured chalks but never really liked the pink ones.'
16. Mud
Lots of our mums craved mud and soil.
'I craved mud in both my pregnancies. I didn't tell my husband at first in case he thought it was disgusting, but I couldn't lie when he caught me licking the unwashed potatoes.'
17. Fire lighters
Don't try this at home!
'I craved fire lighters – I didn't actually eat them, but found it very hard to resist,' said one mum in the Netmums forum.
18. Soap
Danielle, blogger from Blog by Baby, craved soap throughout all her pregnancies. She said:
'I went to the doctors and they explained that it does have a medical reason behind it, it’s called PICA craving, and happens when you have low iron levels. Despite being on iron supplements, it never seemed to subside.'
19. Ice cubes
Eating ice is a fairly common craving during pregnancy. There could be several reasons for this, including morning sickness and heartburn. Another reason could be because of rising body temperature throughout pregnancy and feeling increasingly hot.
Be careful though, too much ice-munching can damage the enamel on your teeth, which could make them sensitive or expose them to decay.
20. Daim Bars in cabbage leaves
At least there's something healthy in there but it's still quite some combo ...
21. Chocolate cake with pickled onions
Maybe the sourness of the pickled onion compliments the chocolate?
22. Pilchards and ice cream
We could see this working, depending on the flavour of the ice cream.
23. Cottage cheese and bran flakes
We're guessing the cheese replaces milk here but we can't lie, it still sounds gross.
24. Sour cream and onion crisps with vanilla ice cream
Not that bad in our opinion.
25. Chicken nuggets smothered in warm custard
Yes, you read that right, custard not mustard.
'I couldn't get enough of custardy nuggets, by my third trimester it was hard not to have them every day!' said one mum on our forum.
26. Water from the hose pipe
This one is really rather specific.
27. Paint cleaner
Not to drink, but to smell – still rather dangerous though.
28. Dettol
Another smell one. We all love the smell of a clean house but this is maybe taking it a tad too far.
29. The smell of a dishwasher opening after a wash
Very specific, but we can understand the satisfaction.
30. The smell of damp soapy sponges
Because who doesn't like the smell of being clean?
