Hi everyone. A couple of weeks ago my toddler had an accident and had a superficial burn on the hand. Even though there were only a couple of small blisters the hospital said they had to remove the blisters to prevent toxic shock. We tried distracting him but I could see by the look on his face he was horrified. Since it has all healed and it has been confirmed by the doctor twice that it has healed, he will not open his hand to play eat or do anything. He doesnt even want to show me. The doctor said come back in a week if he is still doing it but I am worried his hand will seize up as its already been a week! I try to strebch it a bit when hes asleep but Has anyone handled anything similar before and do you have any advice? Many thanks.

Hi Kerry, how has your son been today? It sounds like he is really scared to open his hand after what he went through. Perhaps it's worth getting back in touch with the hospital to make sure it's not a physical issue preventing him from opening his hand. It's most likely an emotional response (understandably) but definatly worth checking out if you are worried.

Yes he still wont open it. I have had the doctor look at it again day before yesterday and she said its fine. He actually told me it doesnt hurt so I think its psycological. We have tried everything and will not open it. He wont get in the bath either,he gets really distressed. I am running out of ideas. Thing is where the hand is clenched all the time, its sweaty and starting to smell bad. Iam having to clean it when he is asleep. The strange thing is that when he was actually in hospital he was really brave and did not make as fuss. He looked a bit queasy but there were no tears. I may call the hospital to see if they can understand whats going on.

Can you try some games that he needs two hands for - catch with a ball, twister, etc and see if he gets involved and forgets he didn't want to open up x

Yes I have tried Games with him. I have tried songs, playing catch many other little songs and games that require two hands. He doesnt forget about it. Struggling what else to do. I rang the health visitors and they said to let him open it on his own terms but its been nearly a month now. 😔

Oh gosh, that's a long time for him to still be refusing, you must be so worried!

I'm guessing you've tried bribery with his favourite sweeties or biscuits?

Can you gently open it whilst he's asleep just to give it a wee wipe?

The same thing happened to my son and now he doesn't open his hand, for 10 days he's only been holding his hand tight; how was it resolved when did he open his hand? did you do physiotherapy to be able to use it properly? Thank you! I am really scared that something bad will happen with his hand..
