Hi my 12 year old son told me and my daughter 18 last night that he's gay. It wasn't a shock as I thought he was for a few years now he's quite feminine / camp.
I had a talk with him and told him everything is ok a gave him a big hug and told him I'm so proud of him 🙂

He wants me to tell the rest of the family / family friends should I do that or should I tell him it would be better telling them toghter ???

I’d do anything that would make him the most comfortable. If he wants you to let people know then I’d do that. It’s not such a big deal nowadays, but he may feel awkward telling extended relatives and friends. I’d tell them if I were you and let him continue life as usual, leave it up to the relatives if they want to mention it or not, like I said it’s not a big issue, most people over the homophobia era

OP you know the extended family and would likely have an idea how they might react to such news. By you telling them you can nip in the bud any negative comments and advise them to keep their thoughts to themselves. I see no reason why a 12yr old who has just plucked up the courage to come out to his mum, should run the gauntlet of possible negative reactions from those who are supposed to love him.

I know if my son came out as gay there would be one or two family members who might be negative. As his mother I would want to get ahead of the curve and ensure they knew my displeasure at their attitude before they had the opportunity to be negative around my child. In fact as a mother I'm sure I would warn them that I would rip out their spleen if my child ever heard anything negative from their lips.

I don't think they would be surprised at all I just think its better that my son tells them himself my mum and dad love my son and would have no issue at all my mum also suspected my son was gay for a few years now it's just my sister I'm worried about.

Is there really any need to tell people? He’s only 12 so why have any drama? As long as he’s happy and comfortable with himself I’m not sure there’s any need for formal announcements.

He’s only a child so “coming out” just seems unnecessary

My 20 yr old dd came out as gay when she was 16, no one else knows except me and her sister.

Hi, this is an interesting post for me. Good on your son for having the confidence to come out, he obviously knows he has a great support network around him. My own 12 year old is excruciatingly shy around anybody else and only has a couple of close friends although they never see each other much outside school.
When ds was in foster care carers told me some things which led them to believe he will one day struggle with who he is. He has always been open and able to speak to me about anything but I’m starting feel as the hormones kick in this is now changing. If you don’t mind me asking, did your ds come out completely On his own or have you ever spoke to him regards anything like this? I just wonder because I just don’t know how my son is thinking. I’ve asked him about anyone he may ‘like’ but he shuts down and gets embarrassed. There were little things he did when he was younger that you would perhaps think he could be gay but then other times not so. Do I sit it out or speak to him? (Sorry about the long post).

Well, if you sister does have a problem with it. That's on her. She'll need to decide if her problem is important enough to justify alienating you from her life. Because I'm positive that your son comes first.
