Just wondering when my little boy can go in the seat part of the pushchair?
Is it when they can support their head or sit up unaided?

Hey everyone,

Netmums Moderator here, just dropping in with some official information...

NHS advice says that you should not move a baby from a pram to a pushchair until they can sit up by themselves

"Pushchairs, also known as strollers and buggies, are only suitable for young babies if they have fully reclining seats so your baby can lie flat. Wait until your baby can sit by themselves before using another type of pushchair."

My little boy is 12 weeks but has really good head control and loves being sat up! Might have a go and see how he gets on! Can always change back if he is still too little! [emoji170]

They say 6 months but I put my baby girl in around 5 months. As long as baby has good head control all is fine.

It is supposed to be about 6 months to allow the spine to be rested.
But many babies like to see more and can sit up and roll earlier than that and a carry cot might be dangerous.
My DD rolled over before 12 weeks, at 4.5 months if you stood her up next to the sofa she would carry on standing there no problem and by 6 months she was up on all fours crawling properly. To have her in a carry cot at 6 months without her being in a five point harness would have been dangerous as she would have climbed out.

It's got nothing to do with head control but their spine. Until 6mths babies should be laid flat otherwise you can cause a curve to the spine whilst it's still developing. This is why all pushchairs other than those that lay flat say from 6mths.  It's the same reason babies shouldn't be in car seat for more than 2hrs at a time as it can damage the spine.

My pram from mamas and papas said that the sit up part could be used from birth, I think I only ever used the carry cot once when he was about 4 weeks old xx

Yes but it should be laid flat!! Not sitting up this should have be specified to you.

My pushchair seat can be used from birth with a insert but needs to be laid flat.

I put my son on the lowest incline, (still almost flat, he can just see me better) at around 14 weeks. He's still totally fed up in there because he wants to see everything, but I'm going to wait until at least 6 months to have him sat upright.

It depends on your buggy seat if it says suitable from birth you can do it now but if it says not suitable until 6 months don't change him until 6 months as it means it does not have adequate support for his neck/spine which can cause life long permanent damage to his spine/neck. Its nothing to do with head control its to do with how there spine forms.

I had a carry cot and a buggy party that was suitable from birth. I used the carry cot until he ds was about 5 months then moved him into the buggy.

It depends on the buggy seat. If it's a seat with a hinged back, that actually changes shape as you recline it and becomes flatter then you can use these pretty much from birth and just start putting the back rest up a notch or two as your baby wants to see more.

If it's something like the Bugaboo prams or Quinny Buzz with a silly bucket shaped seat (where you can only recline it by tipping the whole seat back and then the baby ends up asleep with their legs in the air) then you have to wait until your baby is at least 6 months old as they just can't stretch out and lie flat in bucket seats like these.
