Hello,

My first post here!

I’m just coming up to 20 weeks pregnant (Monday) and currently don’t look pregnant at all. I look like I’ve gained a little weight more than anything, but no actual bump as such.

I’ve seen this is common if you are taller etc, however I’m around 5ft 5 so don’t think that would really apply to me? I am quite lanky in build, have always been around a 6/8 in clothes and probably do look taller than I actually am.

I’ve also not felt any movements- or not that I think anyway. Has anyone found it difficult to tell in the early stages? I did have a scan at 16 and a half weeks as baby wasn’t sitting right to get a length measurement at the 12 week scan and was told then that I have an anterior placenta so I know this maybe isn’t helping with regards to movements. Every now and then I’ve felt like I can feel flutters but that’s about it.

My 20 week scan isn’t until a week on Monday, should I be concerned about any of this? I miscarried in August last year so feel like I’m getting myself worked up over anything that isn’t fitting into the “norm” for a pregnancy.

Hi Stacey, it's Sarah the Netmums Midwife here. Firstly congratulations on your pregnancy, it's a very exciting time, but as you know can be really stressful too.

Twenty weeks is still quite early to be feeling any movements rather than flutters, especially for first time mums-to-be, and many women don't have a big bump until later on either. In fact most healthcare providers won't start measuring the height of your uterus until 25 weeks - and even then we allow a margin of two centimetres above and below the average expected number to allow for individual body shapes and builds.

It's great news you have a scan coming up, but in the meantime if you are concerned you could always ask your community midwife to see you and perhaps listen in to baby, or visit your hospital's Day Assessment Unit.

I hope this helps - and good luck!

Best wishes

Midwife Sarah
